Best practices when pairing aftershave with cologne? Top, middle or bottom notes?

It wasnt coincidence lol. That was my thread over on basenotes and helped a bunch. Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the question. In the end I decided to go for one balm that has gotten great reviews for performance and I'm told the scent wears off pretty quick (Musgo) and another that may pair well with the BdP, but if not, I am sure I'll like it on its own since it seems to have every scent I love in in (Penhaligon's Endymion). If neither of these work for with BdP, that is fine since I wanted each on their own for different reasons. I'll most likely end up buying a truly unscented balm when I find one that is consistently received very well by most people, so far that has been a challenge.

Well this is esoteric! Interesting too. But really, when was the last time SWMBO told you that your base notes conflicted with your top notes?
