I would like to understand.
If you like Carnation or Sage why would you mix them in the middle of this group?
To many things to make sense to me.
Is it because it is hard to be different so I will throw some Oak in the mix?
Does the average person notice?

Honestly? I haven't a clue. That being said, the perfumer was Jean Paul Guerlain (born 1937, now 88 years-old and retired). You could Google the fragrance and/or him; also, you could make inquiries on Basenotes[dot.com] and/or Fragrantica[dot.com].
