Thanked: 4I've used an alum block daily for a couple of years now. I'd suspect the OP's issue has more to do with cutting too close.

Thanked: 55I just got an alum block. I already had a styptic pencil that I use occasionally. I'm liking the alum block. I just slide it over my face at the end of the shave and wipe it off with my hand before I put it away.
Sometimes I'll dab it with the towel as well. I think it's going to last a long, long time!
I also spray witch hazel on my face afterward so it's all probably overkill but part of the fun of wet shaving is just trying out the old school methods and products.Last edited by gcbryan; 03-01-2013 at 08:02 AM.

Thanked: 2Just a heads up. Alum Blocks / Pencils are meant to be washed off.
Also, Pencils are for sealing wounds due to F-ups/Slips and do it quite well. Alum Blocks are more of an antiseptic/astringent made to sanitize/sterilize the fresh exposed skin after you scrapped off the top layer (or some of it)
If I don't was off either of them after usage, they: 1.) Dry my skin out 2.) Cause irritation.
Pro tip: Cold water alum block make for less irritation.
