Thread: Bengall's Band of Brothers

Hi zozo, I'd not seen one either until I bought this example. One caveat however; there are no maker's marks so it may not be a TR Cadman & Sons. It could have been made by some other Sheffield manufacturer cashing in on the Bengall name. But.... it does shave very well indeed! It clearly isn't made of inferior steel.

This is my latest restoration, waiting for to sharpen and then use!
This one I am not sure whether to rescale with English Oak (English blade, English scales...) or use a very nice Australian wood; Ironbark which is deep red or Grey Gum which is a yellow colour (both are hardwood Eucalyptus species).
the 2 different woods and the blade

I'd go with the Aussie wood...
There aren't really any vintage Australian made razors from what I have seen, but the Bengall was hugely popular in Australia , more so than W&B and other makers perhaps, so I think Australian wood is sort of fitting. But, at the end of the day, you will be using it, so which wood do you prefer most? It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice

Truth be told I've only got Grey Gum at the appropriate 3mm thickness

6 months tour of duty and continuing
I love my Bengall Imperial
It's my only razor.
Restored and used for the last 6 months and just had it back to Oz to touch it up again.
I just enjoy shaving with it every day.
Safety razors are for women and children :-)

Thanked: 983Here is mine in an Australia hardwood, as seen earlier in this thread. It was rescaled in Blackbean by Oz. I supplied the scales and he supplied the work of art.

What made you choose the Blackbean Mick? There lots of woods to choose from!

Thanked: 983I thought about using some African Ebony, but I really wanted that for knife scales instead. I had Coral, gum, Beefwood, Leichardt (spl?) pine, Ebony, Western Myall and Blackbean, as well as a few others that I can't remember. I really wanted to use an Australian wood on the Bengall, and the Blackbean was the only one that I had available that I had no plans for. Beefwood and Western Myall would have looked good, especially the Beefwood.
