So, a little update; 4K Norton then 8k with a bit of a lapped flat Fine Spyderco in between finishing up on a JNAT. 70 laps on linen, 50 laps on leather (no paste). Just did a single pass down the cheek and oh boy, oh boy! Can't wait until the full shave tomorrow. This girl is smooooooth.

Would it be fair to say that any Begall razor with the T R Cadman stamp on it was manufactured post 1890? Are there any with "T R Cadman" stamp which does not include the "made in England"? The girl above just has the sole "Bengall" stamp and nothing else. Also, it looks like any Bengall with the star stamp thingy is a newer razor?

From memory, all of mine with made in England also have TR Cadman and are post 1890. Two others are marked Bengall and Bengall cast steel. They are definitely pre 1890 blades. Nice looking razor you have there.

The only Bengalls I have that I'm reasonably certain are pre 1890 don't have any maker's marks at all. Just when they started to put "TR Cadman" on them I'm not sure; it may have coincided with the export-related need to add "Made in England". The difficulty in deciding these issues is compounded by the lack of early examples firmly attributable to the Cadman factory. Keep looking folks, we need more razors!

So...after a few weeks reading SRP, after a visit to an antiques shop near Lincoln UK, now back in the USA for another year, I took my new (first) acquisition to by made shave ready at Old Time Shaving Company, Pasedena, CA. Just waiting for my basic badger brush and styptic pencil to arrive in the post before working up the courage to have a go!

Being a Yorkshire man I had to get a Sheffield!

Greetings all, just joined SRP today, nice to see a Bengall club, although lacking any knowledge as to the history of the razor it has become my daily go to razor (when not shave testing any others), the only markings I have on mine is on the tang, the print one side and artwork on both, cheersName: _DSC0003.jpg

    Hi all.

    First time poster.

I just picked up a bengall and thought i'd share my find here. I got it for $60aus including the stone.

I would also appreciate any advise on what i should do next as this is my first straight razor.

It is sharp but not shave ready sharp.
The handle i'd guess is bakelite based on the age.

It says made in england for A. Edments.
The edments stores started in mebourne and i think the first openned in adelaide in 1928. So that puts this razor between then and when t r cadman and sons stopped making them.
The other side of the razor shows the t r cadman stamp.

Also any advise on how to tell the grit of the stone would be great. But i think it may be too rough, not like what i think a 1000-4000 grit would feel like.Name: ad_1510354411751.jpg

    Hi Crow7
Welcome to SRP and to the bengalls Band of Brothers, not sure what it would take to make your razor shave ready, but for A$60 including the stone has to be a bargain.

Yeah a bargain. Even if the stone is only good for the kitchen knives.
Most i saw for that price when looking were rusty or had chips in the blade.
This only has the discolouration but looks very straight.
Plus it has a history which i why i looked for a vintage one instead of new.
It does have a little bit of surface rust on the back of the spine at the join. The scales cover it so i can ony find it if i go looking.
I think it was previously well loved.
