My only Bengall. It's not a big one, but it was a steal.

This is my latest restoration, waiting for to sharpen and then use!
This one I am not sure whether to rescale with English Oak (English blade, English scales...) or use a very nice Australian wood; Ironbark which is deep red or Grey Gum which is a yellow colour (both are hardwood Eucalyptus species).
the 2 different woods and the blade

I'd go with the Aussie wood...
There aren't really any vintage Australian made razors from what I have seen, but the Bengall was hugely popular in Australia , more so than W&B and other makers perhaps, so I think Australian wood is sort of fitting. But, at the end of the day, you will be using it, so which wood do you prefer most? It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice

Truth be told I've only got Grey Gum at the appropriate 3mm thickness

Hi guys (and gals out there), does anyone know when Bengall started stamping "TR Cadman & Sons Ltd" on their razors, I noticed the other day I have a very thin Bengall, it probably was a 4/8" (~13mm) to start with, the scales are only about that wide too.
Anyway it is the only razor of 4 that has the LTD after TR Cadman & Sons. I would assume this is a later model rather than earlier but was just curious if anyone had any information on the dates of the trademarks.
All of the razors have Sheffield stamped in them.

Thanked: 580If it says England also, post 1891, if not pre 1891. They have been around for a while, and apparently more than one manufacturer used the name Bengall, although I have only seen Cadman examples down our way. That's all I know.

Yeah I have seen examples of other Bengall razors, none in person but in pictures. I read somewhere that a Swiss company was using the Bengall name up until Luke Cadman was granted the trademark in the 1700s. I just wasn't sure when the compan started stamping the Ltd (short for "limited" I'm sure) into the tang as well; which meant the business had become a company as opposed to a sole propieter; now I only assume this because that's how it works in Australia and we are of course still part of the commonwealth and our laws are all based in the British systems for better and worse. Perhaps there were tax benefits to be gained maybe from a reduction in sales and they could write off more expenses, maybe this was for an increase in exports or who knows what but I was just curious as to when the change occurred.
