Thanked: 1587It's all in fun, but there's also serious talent amongst the members here (sadly, I possess none). Don't let my highjinks derail this thread - I know there are some seriously awesome customised Wapis out there yet to be seen. Let's see them.

fritz's rescaled Wapi
I just had to grab this picture that fritz posted in the Restoration forum...
Nice Job, Fritz!
And, I've made my first scales out of white oak, to rescale the Wapi. The picture shows it with just an oil finish on the wood, still thinking about the final finish.

Talk about deja vu! It's off being honed now. I'd actually like to keep the light oiled finish exactly as is, but I know that's probably not practical. Too much water around when in use.
I've been following the talk about resin coating, but that's an example of what I don't want on these particular scales. That clear, thick, high-gloss finish can look nice on certain things, but not on this oak IMHO.
I'm trying out some of the new satin poly finish from MinWax, using some of the scraps from making the scales. I'm sure there's a way to seal it without too much gloss. Perhaps just 1-2 thin coats of CA.

My custom Wapi collection:
I found Wapis to be great practice razors for honing, shaving, and customizing. Somehow they just accumulated:
Left the 9/16" wide, and to the right the "regular" 5/8":
And here each one of them:
Jim (Kyle76) did this job for me. Zebrawood with my initials in Ebony, I believe.
This one got bone scales from classicshaving:
I posted this one before last years. Custom scales in acrylic with a Canadian Nickel as spacer:
Pakkawood scales from classicshaving:
And finally custom scales in Poplar wood.

I once did oak scales on one of my Double Arrows. (Posted pics before) I treated them with Tung Oil only, - after staining. I usually repeat the Tung Oil treatment about every two months on those scales, since this razor is part of my weekly rotation. Works great. Actually, they don't really get wet. I store my razors in a jewelery drawer in the bedroom. While shaving, I rinse frequently only the lather from the blade, followed by a dry wipe with a towel between two fingers, avoiding to touch the very edge. Then after shaving a give it 20 round trips on the strop. No water problem, no mess, no rust. Everything is cool.

Thanked: 416come on gentlemen step right up, step right up. A troubling situation has arrived in the razor club and that is the use of thumbnail pictures. I know that some of you old timers still remember when the razor clubs were a thing of beauty! with large glossy pictures of razors and we viewed until our hearts content. but those days are through it would seem. I beseech all the members of the razor clubs to take the poll in the general section and vote to restore large pictures to our beloved razor clubs. It is up to us gent and together we can restore these clubs to there former glory!!!!!!
