Even though I have none, I'd like to see a bunch in one place. Iwasakis, Tosukes, no names, etc.
Anyone...?

i have one coming in the mail
will post pics.
Vintage Japanese Hand Forged Razor SIGNED KAMATAKA HARU - (eBay.ca item 290285795281 end time 05-Jan-09 00:47:06 EST)
i'm also interested in seeing some japanese trad razors
5th January & it's still not with you! That must be driving you nuts! Nice looking razor. I've had a few bids on them a while back, but my interest seems to have waned slightly of late. Thankfully! Razor's keep appearing & i've got to offload some soon at they rate they arrive!
it can't drive nuts only nuttier
i'm waiting for the mailman every morning with impatience
Ok, I guess I'll post...
I'd like to have one... but a Tosuke or Iwasaki is just too much for my wallet right now... :( Oh, well... But I too would like to see some around here. And perhaps know how they perform...
Is a japanese razor very different from a western style one? I know the grinding is diffeent, but how do they perform? Do you strop them the same way as a western razor? Thanks!
I have the same concerns as fpessanha..... My biggest concern would be with honing a Japanese straight. Both sides aren't the same!! What's the deal with that?? Just joking, but I wouldn't know how to deal with it.
Well thank you JimR for having a photo posted in this thread! Actually Boris too, for that link at least lol. As for honing them, there are some threads floating around. I think one may be in the honing section currently. That or just search for an older thread on japanese honing maybe. They are there. I can't say how they perform, but they are different than a 'western' straight. You only ever use one side of the razor to shave with (i.e. next to your skin), so you need to practice how to reach certain areas with an awkward grip I believe. I too would like to see more pics.
Well Alex, i still have not received the razor yet.
can't find much on Japanese razor honing
but the geometry of these razors is the same as Japanese traditional kitchen knife
it is easier to find sharpening for kitchen knives
Dave Martel made a 2 CD sharpening video
Japanese Knife Sharpening
This is my japan razor. Bought them in poor conditions at the bay. On the handle I glued with epoxy redwood with a ca finish. But I dont use it very often. Its to tiny for me and I have some probs with the handling.
I have two of these razors: a tosuke and an Iwasaki. They are manueverable as heck. I would say a W&B chopper is a Lincoln Continental and the Japanese razors are Mazda RX-7s. They shave great and move around the chin and mustache area like a dream. The edge on these blades can be wicked sharp if you want it to be so.
Some people say they are very unforgiving and wil turn your face to swiss cheese but I haven't experienced this. The Iwasaki has a spike point at the toe and the heel. That heel spike makes me a bit nervous because I don't have experience with a heel spike. Just respect the blade and you will find some of the best shaves from your wakamisori blades.
My opinion is that I like the Tosuke better.
Alright here is a couple pics of my babies. I saw pictures of katana sword handles and I imitated the design on my Iwasaki with nylon cord. It does the job but I am looking for a better handle. The one with the blue handle is your standard Tosuke. I also snapped a photo of that odd asymetrical Japanese style grind.
This is my Iwasaki. I don't think it likes me but I'm working on that. I have a Tosuke too but no good pics.

Alex,
When I saw you post with this title, I thought you were going to be making some Japanese style straights. I got my paypal finger all primed and everthing!
might as well throw mine in as well!

how does the japaneese straight feel while shaving compared do our western razors?
I have yet to try mine but I hope to work up the nerve one of these days...lol....
please write a post when you do im very curious on the balance, grip, width ,length and weight compare to our razors :hmmm:
I loved this one. seconds from being mine, it was fairly snipped.
I got a bunch of straights in the mail today (just check the other Razor Clubs and you may see my crappy camera phone pics) but the gem of my purchases is this Japanese Straight I won on the bay for a decent price. I have no idea of the maker, nor do I know any history on it, but it's a beauty to behold. I'm hoping it can be honed into shave ready condition and not just be for show.

Here is a great little Travel Razor I got off th'eBay and finally got around to cleaning up. There are still some water marks and a little very shallow pitting, but the edge is uncompromised and shaving very well after a few trips across the Norton. The edge is just 5cm long (2"). Here it is shown beside a demitasse spoon for comparison.

Should be here Thursday. Circa 1930, it just needs a clean and a rewrap which I will probably do with to flavors of silk.
Edit: I posted a pic from the original website. The pic must have changed with the same address.
Will Repost later.
Singlewedge, I think you posted in the wrong club. It's a very nice razor though.
Origin the post was in the right club, but the picture changed.
OK so my screen says my post is right. Do I need to log out again and change it?
Edit: I am sooo stupid. Apologies.
Yesterday I got my big Tosuke #3. :y
It was not shave ready, so I honed it from Shapton Glasstone #500 up to my Nakayama Asagi. I expect that #3 is as sharp as it`s smaler brother. :D

here is my fortay into japanese straights so far. i have one more on the way that will need some love, but that's cool with me.
from left to right and then on the anvil
1. blue handle. not a tosuke, just a tosuke handle. do not know maker name.
2. rattan wrapped. not shave ready. need to take to hone. do not know maker.
3. custom RBI from an old file. great shaver and very small.
4. DIY custom to cover up a beat up tang. Wester Damascus. See thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/galle...ese-style.html
5. Custom Russell Badridge western style straight.
all with the exception of the rattan wrapped straight are shave ready. and all are terrific shavers. the non-tosuke and the baldridge are 2 of my top 3.(depews perfect rounds that out.)
enjoy.

Here`s a singel pic of my Tamahagane with unwrapped handle. It gives close and smooth shaves. :)

I thought I needed a scabbard. This is what I came up with.
Hey guys, show us your japanese straights!!!
To keep this thread run, a picture of my Iwasaki Tamahagane with wrapped handle.

Nice collection Mr. Wolf. I would not mind trying a long blade, but it'll be some long time before I feel I really need another one.
A picture of the two Tamahagane together. Bladelength of the razors are both 60mm, width 23 mm.

I don't have one either. This review was well written
http://straightrazorpalace.com/strai...zor.html?ltr=T and ones pretty much titled "Japanese razors" are only ones I've seen.
For those who have both Iwasaki and Tosuke which do you prefer? I know both are of exquisite quality but with regards to closer shave which one?
Mods if you prefer I can post new thread
Thanks,
Ivan
