Attachment 127068I have only been using a straight razor for about a month now. I started off with a dovo, and it is a good razor. I bid on a torrey on eBay that came shave ready. I ended up getting it for 45 dollars. It was in great condition. Only needed to be stropped. The razor feels much heavier than the dovo and upon using it I was impressed. This is my favorite razor. It shaves extremely well and feels great to hold. I would not hesitate to pick up another torrey and recommend torrey razors to anyone. It was my best investment regarding straight razor shaving.
I just found this TORREY club today. Sorry for the bad photo but here are my 4 Torrey razors. All 4 shave like a dream. Torrey's are quality blades all the way. They are not for sale.

I just finished restoring this Torrey...a real nice 6/8, and a Great Shaver. Posted a thread in the restore and custom sub forum if you would like to see more pics: http://straightrazorpalace.com/custo...8-restore.html

Nice scales!
Beautiful. I love Torreys.
Here's a shot of my latest Torrey. I snagged it on eBay for $22 and when it arrived I was surprised at how nice it was.

Hey there!
Just picked up a Torrey 5/8" #156 "The Barber" yesterday for around $15.00 In real nice shape & just needed a touch up on my domesic slate hone & a go on my Koken Shell horse hide strop to shave great. This blade is in my top 2 along side my J.A. Schneider & Co. "The Peoria".
Slawman:hmmm:
I got one! My barber notched Torrey 5/8 arrived today. It was touted as restored and the blade is beautiful, though there's a bit of rust on the tang around the pivot. Now I've got to figure out how to get the rust cleaned up. Couldn't wait, had to shave with it. So this is what a sharp straight feels like! :) I think I may send it to gssixgun for new scales and a nice buff up. Pics to follow.
Try dental floss and MAAS to get into it without un-pinning it. Lapping film can sometimes do it also.

I finally got a picture of her.

Thought I'd give you guys a pic of where the Torrey's were produced. The address is 128 Chandler Street here in Worcester, MA. It's the
red brick building.

My humble contribution to the club
One of the few Torrey's I have that is not a 6/8. At last count I think I have 27. This was in such nice condition I could not pass it up. 11/16 and feather light in the hand. I do not think it was ever honed before I got it. Nice shave like all Torrey's.

This one arrived today. I have never seen a Torrey with a blued blade. I did not realize it was blued when I bought it through eBay. I thought the blade was just tarnished. The blade face says DAMASCUS. Someone scrubbed on the tang over the makers stamp and on the back of the tang to try and remove some corrosion and unfortunately removed some of the blue. :( Even the bevel is blued. Appears to be unused. Has anyone seen this blade before?

I wanted to share these pictures of two beautiful Torrey blades that I recently acquired. Attachment 209067Attachment 209066
I have one with the "orange Dreamsickle" look scales. No lettering on the blade though.
Razors just beautiful, the lower the razor with a yellow handle liked more. Congratulations on your purchase. :tu
@karlej
looks like a home blued blade. JMO
Turns out you are correct. Just an even tarnish.
Another for the pile.

Looks like I have just joined the Torrey Team. Does anyone know when the name changed from "J.R. Torrey Co." to "Torrey Razor Co.?" I have read that it was in 1880 but I find it a little hard to believe that this razor is actually that old.

I've been wondering the same thing myself. Most of the Torrey Razor Co. examples I've seen look newer. Advertising makes it clear that the JR Torrey with the arrow mark was used as late as WWI. I've never seen advertising for Torrey Razor Co. My guess is that the name changed in the 20s or 30s, but it's also possible that the marks coexisted.
My Torrey. Padauk scales.

I love the finish on the blade!
That is a very early Torrey with Mr Turner's signature all over it.
You can see it says 'Manufacturers of razors & strops' on the tang.
Prior to these early ones, Torrey was strictly a strop manufacturer.
Early JR Torrey from my disused "to be restored" collection. Barber's notch, original box, original everything I think! I can just make out part of the second line on the stamp... This is going to be a favorite once I get it cleaned up.

Just finished this one last week. The scales aren't original to the razor. Shaves like a scalded ape.

Bit of patina.

Musicman that's a nice one, the second line is probably Worcester, Mass, Enjoy!
Now I have to get a Torrey strop!
Thanks guy's!!
Excellent blades. I love mine. Really take and hold a good edge and easy to hone.
Nice!!
Lovely razor, doc. I believe that I was watching that one last week, knowing that I couldn't feed the RAD but wanting to see what it would go for. I'm very happy to see that it found a good home!
