I Believe that Backal was a razor made by Dorko. Now about your first question I just got the razor and I put it to the stones right away, so I went Norton 1k, 4k, 8k then to the Chinese for about 200 (100 too many), and then I went to a 1/2 micron lapping film and then 50 passes on the suede kanayama, and 100 on the cordovan (I know that it was a bit excessive, but bear with me). The result was a really smooth and forgiving edge, there was a little less feedback than expected for such size and grind compared to my Henckels. On a side note the razor appears to have had it's back and tang gold washed, the seller might have polish it out when he got the lot and does not come in a box. Above all a nice price for a nice size razor the takes a super smooth edge.
