I myself am new as well, with that said I don't see anything wrong with this razor for your first one. Square points aren't usually recommended for beginners, but I'm sure if your careful you'll be just fine.

I've only been shaving with a straight razor for a few months now but I can assure you that starting with a square point shouldn't be as worrisome as many make it out to be. The big thing is to be very aware where the toe of the razor actually is. I started with a square point and all but one razor in my collection shares this attribute. To this point I've avoided having any real cuts and only a limited number of nicks and most of those came moving from a 5/8 to a 6/8.

I hope the purchase works out and good luck with the new blade!
