6/8 1810’s Greaves & Sons, Shave Ready
This early Greaves razor is lightly restored and in the scales I received it in (though, probably not the original scales). I replaced the ancient, flaking lead wedge with a new non-toxic bismuth/tin alloy wedge and repinned it using Austin’s excellent recreation washers.
The blade is very, very lightly reground to remove the old, wide bevel. I’ve leftt the blade face with a Sheffield ‘glaze’ finish, which also helps mask some of the remaining pitting, and given the spine and tang a mirror polish.
Unfortunately, I faced a Hobson’s choice in the restoration of this blade.
There was an area of significant pitting that went partly into the bevel.
My choice was: regrind further and lose about 1mm of blade width (and I suspect this razor has been reground once before and is a little smaller than when it was new), or leave the pitting and see where I got with honing it.
I chose to retain the width. There are several microscopic holes in the cutting edge, as you can see in the above picture. These don’t in any way effect the usability of this razor, it still shaves great and it won’t nick your strop. The one effect is that every once in a while it might not cut a hair or two on the first pass.
That’s why I’m offering this for $135, shipped anywhere CONUS. It comes shave ready. If you’re not happy with it, I’m happy to accept a return for full money back. Paypal only.
If you’re interested and outside the continental US, please contact me and I’ll get you a quote for shipping.Last edited by Voidmonster; 03-21-2018 at 02:44 AM. Reason: Forgot to mention payment method
