SOLD! Wade & Butcher Celebrated Hollow Ground, 7/8
This was manufactured between 1871 and 1900, probably more toward the earlier part of the range.
I’ve restored it as near to factory condition as I could without losing markings on the blade. Everything but the brass pins I assembled it with are original.
Both scales have an unusual marking which I left in place, simply because I don’t know what it signifies. It sort of resembles a rancher’s pyroglyphic, but that’s not an area I’m well versed in. It might be from a professional honing service, but I don’t know why it would be marked on both scales.
Also noteworthy about them, these scales have the scale presser’s initials marked on the inside.
JV — Jonathan Vickers, in business from 1871 to a little after 1900. Almost certainly from the same Sheffield family as the Vickers who would invent the Vickers machine gun.
This razor is fully shave ready and represents something of a sweet spot in size, weight and grind. It feels excellent in-hand. It’s hollow enough to be easy to hone (I used two layers of tape just to keep everything trim and tidy), but heavy enough to feel substantial.
I’m asking $140 with free shipping to anywhere in the continental USA. I’m happy to ship elsewhere, but please contact me for a quote on shipping price.
