JR Torrey The Celebrated Hollow Ground
Just shaved with this old timer for the first time. Set the bevel on a Norton 1k, then went on to the 4k and 8k and shave tested. However, rather than take it to my barber hone for finishing, I stropped on a CrOx sprayed strop (old cotton belt from goodwill). This is the first time I've ever used CrOx and wanted to see how it would do in holding me over until I can get a naniwa 12k as a finisher. The barber hone does okay, but just seems like I could get more.
Anyway, great shave! Plenty smooth, though the balance of the razor seems a little off... I don't think the scales are original, though I could be wrong, this being my first Torrey. It still feels like the edge could be taken up a notch or two, but I have a feeling I'll be holding on to this one.
There's a lot of pitting, some just above the bevel (but not in it), so I don't think she'll ever look like a supermodel again, but she'll definitely be a good workhorse.
As novice as my honing skills are, and as great of a shave as I just had, it makes me real excited that I have two freshly honed old gals on their way back that Glen took out dancing."Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. You can say that again, Bob... when I ran my alum block in the hollows of my neck, which is where I'm susceptible to get the most irritation, I didn't feel any stinging whatsoever. That, my friend, was a great feeling indeed.
