Thanked: 0Razor Question
Since I am a newbie, I would like to have some opinions from season vets. I will not go into any details, so please don't ask. I am enclosing two photos, sorry about the poor quality. The one razor is a 5/8 round point. The other razor is supposed to be a square point razor. I have enclosed a close up of that razor. My question is this, is that a original blade manufactured as a square point, or a round point that was cut to look like a square point? I have been wrong in the past, and I really need to be certain about this. Thanks in advance.

How long is the alleged cut blade from heel to point ? How long is the blade that is not cut ? Are they by the same MFG ? I cannot tell from the pix either.

Both blades in the second picture appear altered to me as in too short for the scales. I am no expert however.

Bob has a good point we can't tell that relationship either, a pic of both razors closed from a high angle so we can see the wedges and the end of the razors would also be a good tell for us...
The relationship of the Gold Etch is another good tell but we can't see that either
Basically you are asking for an opinion without giving us enough info to start, and even then it is just going to be an opinion from pics posted on the internet
Also from the first pic it does look like the point is what we call "Neutered" perhaps that is what is throwing off your perception, this was common practice with spike points back in the old days, and still is ...

Thanked: 1587Sorry to say that if you want certainty you aint ever going to get it. I guess one way to infer the manufacture/creation would be to measure yours and then try to get data to work out the average length of the hypothesised blade type (I guess in this case Gotta x/8 square points of similar manufacture date), factor in a margin of error, see where yours fits.
I'd suspect though, just by looking at the pictures, that it would be very marginal to say the least.
If I could offer some advice, just on a friendly basis, I'd say that I understand and admire your indomitable spirit, but some battles you cannot win. I think this may be one of them. Do yourself and your stress levels a favour, chalk this one up to experience, and try to find the positives: it looks like a nice clean razor, and Gottas are very nice shavers. Whether it has been cut down or not, it will shave just as well.
Good luck and have fun!
