Thanked: 1Hen and Rooster
I am looking to buy my first straight razor. I saw a Hen and Rooster that I can get new for $49. Who makes it? Thoughts on these razors for a newbie to learn on? Good place to start or should I look at something different? Price point is nice but I don't want to get a razor that will not treat me decent out of the gate causing frustration and ultimately me going back to disposables. Thoughts?
Wife is a nurse and not thrilled about the vintage idea. I am cool with it but she wants me to get a new blade.
Thanks!
Brandon

I think there were some recent threads about Hen and Rooster. Type Hen and Rooster in the search engine and you should find your answer. That being said, $49 for a new razor seems way to cheap. A quality, budget-friendly, new razor should be in the $80-100 range.

This might not be the right time to tell the wife but...honers shave with the razor before returning it to the customer

As to the safety of vintage razors, most pros use or will use upon request Barbicide. Your wife should be satisfied by its use.
I have also done business with Larry as well. As long as you understand that those non shaving flaws may look horrible, his work and customer service is good. If you have certain preferences he will work with you.

Thanked: 522As far as buying a first razor or anyother razor, find out who the quality sellers are and spend a respectable amount on a blade that won't disappoint you. The WIKI used to have a list of razors NOT TO BUY> Check it out first.

An entry level Dovo or Aust , from SRD, comes with a free honing and a second honing free. You know what you're getting in that instance.
