You should have a 1k to set the bevel. You can do it with a 4k/8k Norton but setting the bevel with a 4k could be a long road to learn on. This is all I have used for almost a year now. Fixed up about 30 e-Bay razors so far and shaves are fine for me.
You didn't get the blade hot when buffing did you ?Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
