Default Ok I bought another one today! What width is this blade?

I picked this up off ebay today: Wade and Butcher Hollow ground. The auction only mentioned it was from an estate with no other info so I rolled the dice for $37. I probably overpaid but I set my limit to $40 so Ok its a another razor...

I'm not to sure about the blade width though. To me, it looks to be less than 5/8 and close to 4/8, yes/no?

As far as cleaning this up, I am not going to do much as long as the scales look as good along the inside as they do on the outside. If I do try to clean up the blade, would a little mothers polish be a good starting point. I do not want to mess with the engraving on the blade. What would you do as far as cleaning this up without unpinning it?

Oh and the cross or X carved into the scale is something I've seen on other razors. Does anyone have any insight to this. I was thinking it was a way for barbers to mark their stuff. Or it could be an anti witchcraft totem

Oh I should have been more specific....I just won the auction. The razor hasn't shipped yet. I was just wondering if anyone could tell by looking!

Looks around the 4/8 mark to me, but that's just a guess. only one way to find out.

I have one and it's 5/8. Nice shaving razor and yours looks to be in decent shape. Congrats.

    Thanks for replying.

I will measure and do a follow up on this topic with a pic. I want it to be a 4/8. It will be interesting to to see if my (our) eyes are calibrated to determining blade width from images.

I was reading on the forum about shaving with different size razors and which ones are preferred. Obviously the responses are all subjective to individual taste, but I did pick up on a common theme; shaving with different size razors keeps one on his toes and best behavior .

You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.
