Although I like Neil's answer better, it's likely an owner's mark. That sort of thing is done quite often, especialy in the military, to mark a man's stuff. Since it's not easy to engrave a name by hand with a knife or awl, an assortment of lines and X's were used, with the type and position supposedly unique to the owner. It would seem that they weren't very inventive though, I have half a dozen razors with ID marks on the scales.. all X's.

I am now convinced that there is one all powerful razor that has the power to control those that possess razors with these X's. Those that fall under the spell are doomed to post questions about X's on razors. I too was a victim after receiving one of the cursed razors (below). I tried to break the spell by removing the scales, but the witchcraft is crafty and now I am compelled to purchase every razor I see. I'm cursed!

The X symbol on razors is from the illiterate barber, the others educated barbers put numbers on the scales, right Tom?

Maybe this barber was quite literate and well schooled in Latin studies. Thus, he marked this razor with the Roman numeral for 10. If you run across any other razors marked XLVII or thereabouts it would indicate he was also a good barber with a large clientele. Or, he could have been some clown with a newly sharpened jacknife that he was wanting to try out.
