    Default Mystery Razor

    Hi All!!

Here's a pic of a razor that belongs to my distant cousin (his grandmother's sister was married to my grandfather's brother) HA! Anyway it was his paternal grandfather's.

Anyway there are no markings on the shank at all as it's covered with what I believe is Celluloid and I'm sure that the scales are also Celluloid.

I fully realize the danger of the celluloid degrading and ruining the scales and the blade and I will warn my cuz of the dangers!

It's a 5/8 Squarepoint with very little hone wear.

The only markings on the blade say extra hollow ground underneath of what was an elongated diamond with no visible marking inside it. There is an arrow pointing down from under a small circle in the center of the circle with dots and bars alternating in a semi circle. It does not appear to have once been a full circle.

There are no dates of manufacture or any other markings.

I know that it will probably be just another unknown maker but if any of you members out there have or have seen this razor, any help IDing it would be very much appreciated!!

    Thanks!

It's a true square point it's just my camera angle. I also thought about the maker's name under the celluloid but the only way to find out is to break the covering. The pivot pin is only an 1/8 of an inch behind where the showing steel ends.

Doubt you'll find anything under the cell on the tang. Those that I've seen had the name impressed on the cell or engraved into the MOP.

Cuz sent it in the coffin case but it’s really hard to make out what it says on it! I don’t think I can take good enough pictures of it, but I’ll try!
I ‘believe’ it says King Wilkens on the long part and I can’t make out any of the writing on the short section.

I have a few that have no remaining markings. I have some from John Jay, Torrey and Case and Geneva that also have the laminated shank.

I think the covered tang is going to narrow it down some. Everytime I try to look up info on one I have to fix up, it seems I always hear about 3 names. ERN, Torrey, and I think Henkels but not sure. There may even be more but that is what I remember. Those tangs had the names lightly imprinted on them and disappear quick from what I have seen. Red naked lady I don't remember ever seeing but I am not an old timer when it comes to experience with straights. As I have learned, somebody will post with a pick and more info.

That tang looks like the Wusthof Tridente Eleganza? Know it's probably not it, but similar??

    Hi CudaRunner,
It appears to be a Boker Finest India Steel. See if you can read Boker or see a faint tree on the white tang. Here's a pic of one (not mine though).

There is a diamond etch on the blade. Top of the diamond says Finest India Steel. Bottom says Extra Hollow Ground. I believe the tang is bakelite. I have seen a few of these and it seems common for the Boker markings to wear off of the tang from rubbing on the inside of the scales. Excellent razors.

I don't think the scales are original (not positive though) . Mine has a white tang and black scales like the one in the picture. Maybe Manah can confirm the scales.

The concern is that the tang is secure to the blade. Mine wiggles a little so it has been set aside for repair.

    Nice find. Congratulations

Thanks for the info! I find it very encouraging!! I do hope others can help confirm! It never hurts to have more than one match!!

I looked real hard and I can't see any markings left on the bakelite and I do hope it's bakelite because if my cuz has his heart set on keeping the naked lady scales those can be replicated! Maybe even down to the pink!!

I also took a real good look at the pins under my 30X loupe and I concur that the scales may have been replaces as there are factory pins at the toe but a hand made pin at the pivot!! Thanks for pointing that out! I hadn't thought that far ahead or is it before?
