    Default [Marca Toro] J.B.H & S Solingen

I found this razor in my uncles toolbox. The spines were cracked and bandaged. I cleaned and polished the razor as best as possible. It needs more work but I wanted to get it somewhat presentable.

I cannot find any information on it online, I was wondering if anyone could give me some information regarding this razor.

Can you tell me anything about the condition of the blade? I hear that a razor with some rust or pitting is recoverable but mine has some serious sweeping scratches in the blade as seen in the pictures. Would this razor be usable with more polishing?

I'm thinking yes the actual edge looks good, but the last picture worries me a little, looks like there a dent almost and it is reflected on the edge.

I mean you can see the bevel is different.

there is indeed a dent, very slight but it is there. the actual edge of the razor is fairly straight but looks like it needs to be honed.

I'm just wondering if it's worth putting any more work into. I would need to buy some higher grit sandpaper (I only have 600) and of course it needs to be re-scaled.

I'm thinking that dent only visible on on side from the pictures, will cause some major honing problems since there is no bevel where the dent is.

Be honest with me. should I just keep it in my desk as a nice letter opener? I don't want to waste $$ fixing this thing up. I can see now how that dent would be a major problem. I can feel it when i run my finger over it.

It certainly looks like a dent, doesnt it.

However, if the steel was soft enough to dent rather than shatter, then it was either never tempered correctly in the first place, or has been heated to a high enough degree to lose it, at some time in its life.

Those horrible scratch marks along the blade suggest that some nut has taken a grinder to it, in which case the dent could be where an abrasive wheel has bitten deep.

Hard to say just what the mark is without more detail in the pics, but I wouldnt spend any time on it, if only for the fact that you would get a spot where it wont shave where the mystery mark is, as the bevel would not form on that side and is too extensive to consider honing past, IMHO.

    Regards,
    Neil
