Thanked: 1Couple of good finds...New guy
Hi all,
I am fairly new to both the site and SR's, but thought I would share my newbie experience. After shaving for years with a Gillette DE razor and Williams shaving soap, I decided I would look into SR shaving. I found my parents had an old Wernotte SR from Otte Cutlery in Solingen that belonged to a great uncle. THe razor came with a Russian Strop (canvas/ leather). Reading this site I learned how to strop the razor to get an acceptable shave. Sticky thumb pad test, which told me the razor is in good shape. I finally ordered a honing stone, but was leery of trying to hone with the razor I use without having a back up. I decided I would try to find another used razor to practice on before ruining my daily shaver. So I stopped at a junk dealer and just asked if he had any straight razors. He says sure and comes out with 8 razors. Now all but the three I bought had significant edge damage. Here are the three I picked up for a song.
The first is a Henckels "Maxximum" that I got for the pricy sum of $10.
The second I a John & William Ragg "Paragon" for $12.
The third is a Morris "Collegiate" also for $12.
Now I am going to have to figure out which one will be my sacrificial lamb to the hone . I really like the feel of the Maxximum, light weight narrow blade. But I also like the heft and curved toe of the Paragon. The Collegiate has the same exact blade as my Wernotte but I dont like the scales feel in the hand.
Here is my Wernotte...
