    Default Spike question

Question: What, if any, are the advantages of a spike razor?

I have seen numerous negative comments on this razor style and wondered, there must be some good points / advantages to it.

They allow for precise trimming. I don't leave any whiskers, but some men sport a moustache or goatee or such. I like them under my nose for going across the grain.

Other than that, they look quite sexy

If you are referring to the spike razor made by union cutlery I just purchased one off ebay. It came yesterday. Cleaned it up, gave it a good hone and strop and just shaved with it. Gave a great shave in a small size razor. Hope that answers your question.

Great Question. I just shaved this am with my grandfathers spike. I was honed by Larry @ whippeddog, so I know it is sharp. I looks like a wedge or near wedge, and doesnt seem to give me a great shave like my full hollows do. Like some previous responds, I was able to trim up my half ass MOvember moustache quite well. haha Im still new to the straight shaving world, but the full hollows seems to give me a closer, nick free shave.

The Devil is in the details....
Spikes can be easier than a round point for getting into a tight spot,
but so can a French/Irish point as well as a properly honed Spanish point.

The spike can be a bit less forgiving than a round point, but any way you break it down you are placing scalpel sharp steel to your face.

I went from Shavette to a spike when I started out, I think it taught me better technique out of the gate.

They can all do the job detail work included, as with so many things involving straights it is a personal preference and YMMV thing.

A spike point will let you know right away if your not paying attention to that end of the razor. I have gotten used to them from the beginning and had no real problems with them. They are great for running a line like down the front of your side burns. You want to get 3 for 4 hairs standing next to something , a spike will do it in full view.

Just a different style that's all. A competent shaver can get an equal quality shave with any razor. As to the negative comments it's no different than folks saying they would never drive a car with a manual tranny.
