Thanked: 1My Ralph Aust from Straight Razor Designs...
So.. Here we are, "like 4 years later," and my first Straight Razor turns out to be a Ralph Aust.
Crazy, like I joined this website way back when with every intention on using a Straight Razor, but I had one major problem, "a physical disability." I have a problem with my nervous system and my hands used to be very shaky. Even though I had an interest in Straight Razors I couldn't bring myself to trust myself to be able to do this until very recently...
Well twelve years ago I started getting into all kinds of meditations and martial arts. This last year I noticed something very interesting, "a noticeable steadiness in my hands." I guess twelve years of practicing body mechanics and breathing.. Sooner or later that's going to work its magic...
Well my birthday was slightly over a week ago, and I went ahead and picked up my first Straight Razor... But Straight Razor Designs was out of stock on everything for the holidays... So I went with what they had, "a Raplh Aust." I was assured that the blade was of impressive quality...
Let me explain, when I hold this razor in my hand, it is bloody apparent that the blade is of impressive quality!!
Well, I haven't shaved yet.. LOL, it is Christmas Season, and I've been buying gifts not just for myself, but for family as well, meaning, "I still need to purchase my strop and other supplies in the next couple of weeks." However, that's ok!! Because I like to wear pencil moustache's and I had a crazy flu this winter, and I recently removed my stache, so that all needs to grow back.. And I'm just really excited to have my first blade. Thrilled that my hands are way steady now; something absolutely huge for me!!
Always think positive!!

I too had some issues with shaky or just unsteady hands too. Mine just came with age and early on made certain shaving passes, at least adventurous. Honing was a challenge too. Since, with the stropping, honing and shaving and all requiring delicate manipulation of the fingers, wrist and hands, my dexterity has significantly improved. Hardly think about it anymore.
If you're still having any of those issues, I hope you have the same experience I did with the repeated use being therapeutic!!
Best Regards,
Howard
Also, I have the Aust 5, 6, and 7/8's and all are fine razors and shavers. Enjoy that razor!!

My first 2 new razors were Ralf Austs from SRD, a 5/8 and a 6/8. I have found them to be great shavers and easy to maintain by stropping correctly. Good luck to you as you get the rest of your supplies and progress in skill.

Well my Ralf Aust arrived yesterday from Obie.
7/8 round point, so far the largest blade in my very small but budding collection.
This razor is truly substantial, good heft and solid grip.
I bet it is double the weight of most razors.
It just so happened I had a two day growth so perfect timing on receiving this new addition.
I completed my pre shave ritual, shower first while the badger soaked up the warm water.
I chosed Proraso green sapone for no specific reason, (eenie, meenie, miny, moe) and went to town.
It was slow and deliberate WTG, a second lather and quick ATG shave.
Now it’s common knowledge that Obie knows how to hone a blade but this shave was totally over the top.
The result was by far the best shave I have ever experienced.
Note……if you decide to purchase the 6/8 from Obie after reading this,……it’s too late.
I bought it this morning.S.L.A.M.,.......SHAVE LIKE A MAN!!!
