Thanked: 1Personally, I prefer the Feather for the quality and ease of shave it offers. Sharpness is not an issue once you learn how to handle it, it actually gives me less irritation than a conventional straight because I don't have to "hack away" at my chin to get it smooth. I have chin whiskers that even take several passes with a Feather blade to get smooth (and even that sometimes gets hung up on them) and I find that with a read straight, I just can't get it clean. Even with a pro-honed blade. I have chin whiskers of steel.
I do love the traditional aspect of a conventional straight and everything that goes along with it. It upsets me every day that I just can't match the shave a Feather gives.

I would start with the basic Feather Artist Club - its $99 and is very solid.
You can spend more, but it wont' get you a better shave.
The Pro Guards are fine for a start, but if you look at the differences, you will note that the Professional has a thicker blade and the Super Professional has both a thicker blade and more blade exposure.
My limited experience and feedback from others is that the Super Pro shaves most like a 6/8 or heavier grind. I like the shaves I get from the Super Pros.
I've never tried the Pro Guard, but its the thinnest of the blades. If you've never shaved with a straight before and are cautious about the whole thing, it makes sense to start with the Pro Guards, but I'm pretty sure you will get a better shave from the Pros or Super Pros.

Thanked: 21I've been using the Feather AC with the Pro Super Blades for more than a year. I routinely do a 2.5-3 pass shave with no problems, unless I let the blade go longer than about 8 shaves. Perhaps I like it so much because I've never tried a traditional straight.

I think someone said that the shaves are better after the first shave because it dulls the feather blade a little ----do any of you purposely try to dull the blade before the first shave?

in another thread someone suggested rolling a cork under the edge a few times to take the harshness off the blades.

Thanked: 1Most guys like the Pro Super blades, but for some reason they beat me up. I have great success with the Professional blades. They are thinner and have less exposure. I wish I could explain the technical reasons why I experience this. The Pros are so much better for me, whereas the majority of guys can only get on with the Supers.
Using an Injector blade centred in the holder is also an option. they are more forgiving.
