    Default New Henckels?

I was shopping on Sunday and I browsed past a cutlery shop that had a brand new Henckel's straight for sale. I thought that they no longer manufactured them? It was for sale at $185cdn, which isn't cheap, but it was a really nice looking razor. If it is a rarity, I might pick it up. What do you experts think?

I also only recently discovered the new Henckels. I have always loved their cutlery. It's not necessarily the best you can get, but it is very good cutlery and holds an edge well.

The new henckels straights are stainless steel, at least as far as I could find anyway. This isn't bad, but it will take a little longer to get that initial edge on there. I don't have a SS blade, but I have been told that once you have established your edge, it is no harder to maintain then a high carbon blade.

Yes, it was very similar, if not the same, as that one. I suppose that you can still get them then and $185cdn is pretty expensive. Thanks.

I've got one of the 6/8 from cutleryandmore. It's a good razor, but I suspect that it's made by Dovo nowadays.

Yeah, I was going to say that it looked very very similar to my Dovo Classic Special Black 5/8. The blade is the exact same shape and the scales look the same except for white and with the Henckels logo. I probably won't be buying a new one. I want an older one.

We talked about Henckels still making straights in the chat a couple of weeks back, which is when I found this baby, issued as part of their 275th anniversary set:

It's also the same shape as the vintage non-Crowley Friodurs. But the new ones aren't finished as well as the old ones, and they come in the same style casket as some of the newer Dovos. Also, the new-production 5/8 Henckels don't say "Friodur" on them anywhere, I'm not sure why.

Edit: The new production 6/8 Henckels *do* say "Friodur". I have no idea why the two sizes appear different.

I don't think anyone has determined whether henkels makes them or not. I would tend to think for the number they produce it doesn't pay to gear up a straight production dept. especially for such a specialized product. Maybe someone should E-mail them and ask. I wouldn't be surprised if Dovo makes them. They seem to make them for everyone else.

Generally speaking I would not buy a straight in a regular shop unless you KNOW their policies when it comes to handling shaving implements. They usually let any ol' Joe (no offense Joe ) off the street to handle the razors with their greasy grimy fingers and then they try to sell you the very same razor
