Thread: Dovo Best Quality - Half Hollow 5/8" from royalshave.com really shave ready?

Hey and welcome to the forum. I have not dealt with the vendor you mention but I would really wonder if that is not a fancy way of saying the razors are supplied with the factory edge. If that is the case then it is pretty hit and miss as whether the edge will be shave ready or not from the many posts on here about new razors with factory edges.

My turn to agree with.you Bob, I would take that to mean a factory edge. But to be sure you could ask the vendor specifically whether it is hand honed to shave ready.
It if it is the razor you REALLY want then is the additional cost to get it honed that much of a disincentive that you would get something that you don't REALLY want.
My (and this is MY) take on blade oil is that it would be a nuisance to have to clean my.razor every day prior to use and oil it every day post use, but I guarantee that about 50% of the membership will have the opposing view
How much is the oil, if it's about $20 put that into the honing, get the razor you want and care for it well.

The superior shave should also have the razor you are looking for and for much less money and Jarod sharpens his on coticules. The website is thesuperiorshave.com good luck

I did not want to comment on oiling blades but there again I agree with what ED has said. I would say that unless you live in an extremely humid climate oiling every day is not necessary. A thorough drying of the blade and between the scales with toilet paper and laying it open for a few hours before putting it away should be enough. I would also not store a straight in the bathroom.

I do oil my blades when I go away on holidays and use mineral oil. It is inexpensive and so far has done the job. OTH nothing wrong with oiling a blade after every if you want added protection.

6/8 is only about 3mm wider than 5/8, and quite often beginners will be recommended either size, and ultimately after reading various stories from different members, you will learn to use whatever razor you get, so if you are only looking at the 5/8 size because it is the size most commonly recommended but prefer the 6/8 then let your decision be informed by what you like.

Vintagebladesllc does have Lynn hone their blades and the are a good company to deal with. I myself just got a dovo silver steel from them a week and a half ago and it was definitely shave ready.

This was the case in the past, but you should ask them, I don't think there is any other way to know for sure.

I emailed Jim from Vintage Blades LLC and asked him directly if still Lynn Abrams hones these blades, and will get back with the answer as soon as I hear back from him. If yes, then I'm going to go ahead and purchase the Dovo "Best Quality", 5/8" Full-Hollow, Carbon Steel Straight Razor - Professionally Honed.

Just curious.... What do you guys think about that Boker King Cutter" 5/8" Razor Black Celluloid btw? Would anyone say that it's a better blade than the Dovo Best Quality?

The "factory certified" edge is a factory edge. It says so on the website.

IMO 5/8 is the easiest of the common sizes to shave with. I also love 6/8 and I don't think it's that much harder to use.
