Joseph Elliot Silver Steel question
I picked up this razor today, and to my amateur eye it has the looks of an early- to mid-1800's razor, but the barber's notch has me wondering if this actually used to be a big blade that has been honed to death over the years... Can you guys weigh in with your opinions? Voidmonster? Scienceguy?

I won the eBay auction but have not received the razor yet, so at the moment this is the best I have.

Thanked: 634I think some of the razors of that time period were made that blade size. In face I have a Joseph Smith & sons on the bay and it has a blade much like that.

I have a J.R. Torrey that is very similar, though the barbers notch is a touch smaller. I would think it is very possible that it is close to the original size.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Early 1830's. It's been rescaled. It does have a bit of hone-wear, but I've got plenty of razors with more that work great. In fact, check out the Hiram Gilbert in this thread. It's got about the same amount of wear, but it shaves great. On the second page is also a picture of another Elliot that's basically the same make as yours just with a blade etch.

Thanks! I was hoping you would come along and shed some light on it, my search wasn't as fruitful as that. The description even said the scales had been replaced at some point, it looks like a good candidate for some custom horn scales...

I'm in the middle of migrating all my data from my old PC to a new one or I'd have posted pictures of the two Elliots I've got like yours. Most all their razors from that time period had the pointy-ended scales. The collars varied a bit with a slight bias toward the larger, 'dome-style'.
