Thanked: 1How good do they get
Here's a question, how good does a razor get? I can buy a brand new dovo pre-honed for $76 and then go on and spend $800-900 for a top of the line model but, were does the blade stop getting better and I start paying for engraving and nice scales?
opinions please.

When you're into the hundreds of dollars you can bet the razor shaves beautifully (or at least it bloody well better), but mostly what you're paying for is a hand crafted artisan instrument.

Ironically, a $10 pickup can turn out to shave just as well. For $20 I picked up a thing of beauty that simply wipes the stubble off. My best shaver cost like $15 but it sure ain't pretty. This is all in CDN dollars.

Remember a Yugo will get you where you want to go just a good as a 700 series BMW just not in as much style or luxury. The same with razors. A cheapie can shave just as well as the expensive one. What X said is correct. Of course just because they shave the same doesn't mean they are the same quality wise.

In this case it's more like the Yugo will be just as fast and handle just as well as a Carrera 4S but won't be as stylish

Thanked: 1Great to know that I don't have to spend a fortune to get a great shave.
however if ebay was not an option and you could only buy new razor's. A zeepak is not going to be as good as a Dovo or a TI but will a basic dovo or TI shave as well as some of their more expensive models.
Its obvious that when you go up top of the range the only thing that seems to change is the engraving and scales but lower down they offer different blades.

Thanked: 324That's the nuts and bolts of it. Pumas, Dorkos and TI's, however, aren't really all that fancy but still rather expensive and it's because of the quality of their steel. The really interesting thing is that you never know when you're going to stumble across a truly oustanding razor, name brand or otherwise when you're buying Ebay, which is a large part of the appeal to collecting.

One real advantage to having a custom piece done is that you know exactly what to expect. IIRC you can even specify the Rockwell hardness when commissioning a piece from Robert.
