Fixed straight razor
Hi,
I am looking for a nice Fixed Straight Razor ( like the japanes ones)
But the original japanese are just immensely expensive.
Are there cheaper ones? Maybe not made in japan?

Thanked: 24To my knowledge, japanese kamisoris and customs are the only fixed blade razors there are.

Thanked: 284What are you looking to spend? There's quite a span in cost so maybe there's something that'll fit your budget.

Thanked: 4826My issue when shopping for them is not knowing the makers/brands. The prices vary a lot so not being in the loop I have no idea where the value for my buck is. At some point I'll get the research done and figure it out, in the meantime I'll wait and watch.

Yeah, any custom-maker could make you one, if he wants to go down that path. Good luck.

Thanked: 4826I have eyed a few of Charlie's razors. He does do very nice work. I doubt they are budget priced though.

I should preface this by saying I'm a fixed blade rookie, so take this with an appropriately-sized pinch of salt...
A while back I rolled the dice on a fixed blade on ebay. It's made by "Master Lezcha" from the Ukraine. So it's not Japanese steel, but it has the form and grind of a kamisori. Search for "Lezcha razor" or something similar and you should find some.
It took quite a bit of work on the hones to get it to the point I consider shave-ready, but it has worked *great* ever since. As I said above, I'm anything but an experienced kamisori user, so I can't compare it to a 'real' Japanese blade. But for the price, I figured it was worth a shot, and have not been disappointed.
That having been said, if I had the cash, I'd also be ordering me a Lewis for all the reasons above!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I bought one of these:
KIYA Ichogake Japanese Kamisori Straight Razor | Fendrihan Shaving Store
It was on sale less 30% a few months back. It shaves quite nice after I honed it, for something with a square point and heel .Last edited by Hart; 02-18-2014 at 03:46 AM.
