Thanks for all the input. After looking at all the other Masonic stuff out there it does just seem different. Does anyone know if restoring this razor would destroy the etching? And I'm curious to know hoe the etching was done. Is it acid etched? It seems like the effect could be replicated with sandblasting but idk if they had that back then

You guys are funny, that's not a trowel it's a razor. How can a mason use a razor to lay mortar?

    I'll see myself out now.

As far as the etching goes and if it would be destroyed by restoring, that would depend on how you would want to restore it. If you used sandpaper it will probably take some of the etching away since you are taking metal off the blade with the paper. it would be possible to use a light touch and preserve it, just time consuming. If you wanted to just use a good metal polish it won't take the etching away but if there is some more serious corrosion it won't take it all away. Personally, I'd go with metal polish and leave it after that. It's an old blade with imperfections, which in turn makes it perfect.

I think you'll find that those symbols are a very ancient form of magic once the razor is sharp it will never need stropping or honing!

Im going to try soda blasting momentarily on my masonic etched chopper. Soda blasting creates no heat and only removes patina, rust, etc unlike media blasting....hopefully I can give ya some insight.

I am very interested to know if the soda blasting works. I have a blast cabinet myself but I've never used soda in it. Keep me posted if you try it

Not sure itll look perfect but I can definitely see the etching better, when I got the razor I had no idea it even had an etching the patina was so even over the entire blade. Was rust free but dirty as heck, ill get pics up in a bit. Soda isnt reusable so a cabinet wouldnt be ideal
