    Question Razor boxes?

What material were those old razor storage boxes made of? It looks to be some kind of thick, stiff paper to me. Also, what is the covering material that was applied to the outside?

I ask because I want to try and make some.

They are made of cardboard. As to the covering I would guess its some kind of oil cloth type material. The later razors had wood, plastic and vinyl cases.

I had a few very worn out half boxes laying around so I took a razor blade and cut them apart to see what I could see.

The cardboard is interesting. It is extremely thin, yet stiff. Most cardboard I've ever seen that thin is quite a bit more pliable. Some of it seems to have a tough, thin waxy coating on the inner surface.... some does not.

The outer wrapping is still eluding me. It is most certainly paper of some sort. Textured on the outside and probably treated to be water resistant.

I think I'll visit some craft and hobby stores to see if I can find similar materials. If suitable stuff can be found, it should be rather simple to construct a few prototype boxes. Then I can worry about the more tricky things like embossing and painting.

There's been discussion before too that the plastic cases didn't allow any kind of "breathing" of the razor inside that could lead to faster rust formation. The cardboard acted as a sort of de-humidifier to keep the razor dry; of course, that relies on the cardboard not getting soaked itself.

The other thing with the plastic boxes, is they won't hold all razor sizes. 6/8 seems to be aboput the largest that they will hold comfortably.

I have several boxes with varying material on the outside. some are textured surfaced paper made to look most like leather (a wallpaper might be similar). Most I have are older and seem to be covered in bookbinding linen. The fabric old books are covered in. After checking the library I have found that I also have many books that resemble leather like my newer razor boxes. hey are not leather (I have a lot of leather bound books and they are different) but made to resemble it.

If I wanted to build a old style razor box I would look at bookbinding supplies. Perhaps Bruno can help you out. If I remember correctly he mentioned that his mother was in that industry.
