Thread: Help Identifying

I just picked up this razor today and need a little help. Nearest I can tell is that its made by Gebruder Schmachtenberg.

Welcome to the forum. That is a very nice looking blade but if the makers name is not stamped on the blade it would be difficult to say with any certainty who made it.

Looking at the setting it is photographed in (table I assume), it is an Aussie ebay seller rspe7027. he usually only carries nice stuff.

I thank you very much and yes it is that particular seller. I am going off the emblem on the blade, Used by the Schmactenberg Brothers 1898-?
I have the pdf German cutlery makers guide and it gave the description on the blade to that date. So now begins the process of identifying the model.

Which emblem are you talking about - the anchor with the crossed swords? That looks to me like the coat of arms of Solingen. If so, that alone will be unlikely to help you...
Similarly, Silberstahl is German for silver steel. Here's a similar example of the 1a Silberstahl: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...ht-razors.html

Regardless, it should be a good shaver - let us know if there are any other identifying marks (e.g. reverse side of tang)?

I was wondering about that too https://www.google.ca/search?q=solig...ficial&spell=1 . Usually the makers mark/symbol is stamped onto the tang.

I have a blade stamped Bohler Extra Solingen with no makers mark stamped and is a fine shaver as yours should be also.

Bohler Extra and 1a Silberstahl are types of steel IIRC.

the emblem on the blade is identical to the mark used by the Schmactenberg Brothers from 1898 to who knows when.

Agreed, but Schmactenberg Brothers usually stamp it on the tang in my experience. The coat of arms is used by others - see a quick example here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...-solingen.html

Thanks for that clarification. even if I never do find who made it, it is a beautiful razor.
