Default Anyone know anything about George Savage razors?

I picked this one up at an auction simply because it was a 9/8. It's a serious wedge and weighs as much as a shovel. It is a #1 per the attached Henckles grind chart and near a wedge per the other chart. It has ever so slight a curve though, so not a true wedge. I will likely restore it, but I am just hoping someone has some info on the manufacturer, etc... before I go grinding away on it.

The tang is marked as shown below, but is mostly worn away.

    George Savage
    XX
    Double X Razor

The etching on the blade reads, 'NEPLUS ULTRA'. I can't wait to shave with this deli slicer.

    Thanks - John

Thats a mean looking mofo. I am not crazy about etchings on the blade, but a intimidating chunk of metal none the less. The biggest i have is 7/8 , i have yet to shave with it, but just holding it in my hands makes feel pretty manly i ll tell you that much.

    Fred,

I agree with you regarding this etching. I actually like some etchings, but this looks like crap. I am probably going to grind it off, despite destroying the 'stock' nature of the razor. I may put this one up for sale once restored, so keep your eyes open for when the shaving spade hits the market. This thing only bows down to Josh's -15 stamina World Cleaver. - John

It's all in the name: a savage razor. Tame it first before it touches your face!

I had a "Ne Plus Ultra" like that once. Mine wasn't a George Savage, though. It was a Wm. Greaves. This is how it came out after a little work.

Thanks Joe, it cleaned up nice. Have you tried shaving with that monster? - John

I did. It shaved great. Sold it to a guy in China.

    Default what a whopper

Nice - although who Savage was is anyone's guess - probably one of the lord knows how many cutlers working in Sheffield in the late 19th/early20th C. It's certainly impressive. While we're bragging on size I have to confess that my 'big boy' is a Kropp. It's a mere 8/8 - but (aha!) it is a hollow grind, not a wedge and boy, is it scary!

    Default George Savage razor

    Hi John,

I'm doing research on the Sheffield manufacturers. It's a nice piece, trust you've not done anything nasty to it. If it's still intact I'd like to talk to you about buying it.

    Regards, Walter
