Missed out? Announcing the new SRP Straight razor.
I am very pleased to be able to announce the new SRP official site razor.
The entire story behind this project is so amazing I’m going to take the time to explain it to all of you.
Last summer our own JimmyHAD was over in Spain for a Tattoo Artist Convention and during a break he noticed an old guy who had this very distinctive tattoo of a straight razor on his upper arm. Well, it turned out this guy was Jose Maria Avril de Chiste who it turned out worked for Jose Monserrat as the chief production guy and master razor maker. They discussed razors and he said he really wanted to get into razor making again and with Jimmy’s prodding agreed to begin to explore the possibility of a limited run of maybe 40 razors but they would have to be really special.
So in December he contacted Jimmy and said he was ready. He said he had procured the remaining pieces of the Gabon Meteorite and for those of you who don’t know this was a meteorite that fell to earth in Gabon, Africa but was on private property and the owner has been selling the thing off over the years. Several watch outfits like Rolex make meteorite dials and it’s from this meteorite. Jose said he had enough material to produce 35 straights made from this meteorite which is Nickel-Iron and makes the best razors you will ever see. He has named this razor “The Extraterrestrial” and that name is laser etched into the blade and filled with pure platinum. The razor will be 5/8s and half hollow with a worked spine. For scales befitting such a piece he has chosen authentic New Zealand kauri Wood. Now as you might know this stuff is a treasure in New Zealand and illegal to trade. One of our members from New Zealand risked life and liberty to smuggle enough out of the country. How he did that is a story in and of itself. Inscribed in the scales will be a motif of a falling meteorite. They will be one piece scales by the way.
From the photo I saw the razor has a pattern to it not unlike Damascus but it isn’t. We’ll get a photo up in a few weeks once Jimmy gets the real razor in his hands. The razor will arrive in a custom wood box. We don’t have enough wood to make a box out of Kauri so it will likely be a medium oak quarter sawn, I’m thinking.
What we’ll do is open a post on a specific date and time and the first 35 to claim this razor will be the very lucky owners of one of the most magnificent razors ever produced. They will be delivered slowly. It will probably take over a year to deliver all of them similar to the Williams razor that is still going on. Hopefully this old timer won’t die on us before he finishes.
So what is the price of this beauty? Well since the wood was smuggled and the razor material came to Jose by uh-hem questionable circles and he is doing the labor as busy work the price with all shipping and customs fees and shipped to your door will be $401.00.
Watch for more details and the sign up post in the coming weeks.
