I'm going to wait to hear from my elderly brothers, but it looks a bit serious, more like pitting than rust from what I can tell in the picture. Heading towards Devil's spit if not dealt with??

Personally, wet dry sand it from a high grain paper incrementally down to a low grit paper, if necessary. Then back up to a high grit sandpaper incrementally to repolish it. After that, hand rubbing in that Blue Magic goodness.

+1 this technique. This way you don't over-correct and go too low, thereby making more work for yourself.

The sharp end of the blade still looks good by the way...

    Good luck

BlueMagic Blue Magic is a smelly, but reliable metal polishing compound.

Devil's spit is our insidious enemy otherwise known as pitting. There can be micropitting or heavy pitting. From what I've seen, pitting left alone never gets any better. Left unattended, it goes from bad to worse. Ask Angelina Jolie. Leave Brad somewhere alone and Poof!--three more adopted kids

    Have a great weekend!

Take a single edge razor blade and cut/scrape the rust off, a little WD40 will help. Then some 000 steel wool and more WD40.

You will then be able to see how deep the rust/pitting really is. If more is needed, start at 600 go up or down from there. 600 stria can be polished out with any good metal polish.

That looks like some pretty aggressive rust, I would really look into how and where this razor was stored.

Devils spit is a term coined here, I believe by Glen. It is a black rust formation that is raised and or at its most aggressive where it has eaten all the metal, a pitting that is very strong black and bubbly looking. Simple scraping or sanding will not remove it and grinding is required.

Black Rust is different from red iron oxide rust surface rust and some believe it is iron oxide that has chemically changed from Red Iron Oxide (Fe2 O3) to Black Oxide (Fe3 O4).

Black rust/ Devils spit is very difficult to remove completely and very destructive.

Yours does resemble Devils Spit, a razor blade will let you know.

For future information, a razor blade is a great way to cut off rust and arrest the rusting process especially if you do not have time to fully restore a blade.

New acquisitions get a razor blade and steel wool going over and WD40 wipe down then put away for future repair. At least for now any rusting will not continue.
