Thanked: 2Guaranteed razor
I got this razor on eBay for $42 with shipping. Looks to be a 6/8, maybe, with some rust and a slight smile to the blade. Only marking on it is "guaranteed"stamped on the tang. I'm thinking that, if nothing else, it'll be good to practice honing on. What's your thoughts?

Thanked: 60Looks like it needs a bit of TLC, but from what I can tell in the photo there doesn't seem to be a ton of hone wear. Assuming the edge isn't very corroded and it's quality steel you should be able to make it shave-worthy. Best of luck!

Thanked: 4827well I think that the best razor for honing practice is one with no geometry issues and quality steel. I can't see the whole blade and the pic is low quality bough I wouldn't venture a guess on the corrosion but it does look like it may foot the bill. tape the spine when you start and you won't create and geometry issue on the spine. Now that you have a practice razor, welcome to HAD

Thanked: 2Now, time to acquire the hones!

Idea... Before the hones try a pasted cotton web strop. It may be enough to bring up an useable edge if it's not too dull.
May put off spending a lot on something you might not like.
If worst comes to worse. See if there's a member here that does honing. Have the razor evaluated and sharpen and a strop might do you for awhile.
Idea.

Thanked: 2Ok, I sent the razor to Big Easy Tools. I don't know if they're a sponsor here, but they recommend this site in their site. Anyways, it went for a cleaning and honing. He was able to get the bulk of the pitting out and an edge that'll shave. However, the old celluloid tortoise scales decided to self destruct while there. It now has some nice black scales that seem stouter than the old ones. Anyway, I got it today and haven't shaved yet, since I don't have my strop and brush yet. Hopefully Star Shaving will come through for me soon.

I am very interested to see how you like the edge. I have Big Easy bookmarked and peruse their inventory from time to time. I also read their page on their 'fire edge' system. I'd can't wait to hear from someone that actually has a razor sharpened by their system. Keep us informed

Thanked: 580It shouldn't need to be stropped for your first shave. I would try it out before attempting to strop it. Looks like it came out very nice.
