1700s razor?
this is a real shot in the dark.... I have this one coming in the mail for restore, seller said no name on razor but described as 1700s, im hoping under the rust theres some id. my impression is early 1800s, not 1700s. im hoping that one of you experts might have a clue based on blade shape, its not a usual one so I was hoping it might ring a bell with someone. im mosty looking for some idea of what the original hande may have looked like on this one. again, I know its a shot in the dark and ill post better pics once I have it in hand. thanks.....

No the scales look 1700s but the tang is distinct where a 1700s piece would have no distinction between the tang and the cuting edge. I suppose it could have been reground but it is difficult to really tell from the photo.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

The curvature and shape of the blade make me suspect it is a homemade job.

the smile in a forged blade is a natural result of hand forging the bevels but the way this piece shows control of the curves from spine to tang portion made me think it was done by someone with a lot of skill and most likely not the makers first jaunt into razors. purely conjecture but that's my gut. very possible could still be a local black/bladesmith or home job, very well thought out and made nonetheless. I will post pics when its in and after taking off the handle to inspect for markings. that wil give a more clear shot of the tang/tail area at least.

Thanked: 3164There is something a bit odd going on there - might just be the pic, but it looks like the lighter area of wear on the tang near the pivot does not match up with the scales - almost as if the hole in the tang has been re-drilled nearer the tail for some reason.
Maybe that's just the way it was made, hard to say.
The scales look like home made jobs - old, but home-made, and the collars are missing, which gives me the idea they are not original to the razor.
