Damascus Straight
I am a sucker for Damascus steel. Just love the way it looks I guess. I found this on ebay and fell in love with the way it looks. The description reads:
"Beautiful 1095/15n20 Damascus steel strait razor with exotic hardwood scales. This razor is hand made for San Tan Cutlery in a shop that has been producing hand made strait razors for three generations. Included is a leather case to protect your razor when not in use. The edge has been set and honed and is ready to use!"
Do you think this would be a decent shaver? I don't want to pick it up if it isn't going to be usable.

I just found the "San Tan Cutlery" on Facebook. They have some really awesome looking pieces. Pretty decently priced as well. Wonder if anyone here has an experience with these.

I would be concerned about the blade itself. The solicitation reads that the razor "was made for" San Tan Cutlery not made by San Tan Cutlery. I think the blades are imported and perhaps have scales added somewhere else. They may make a good paperweight but not anything to shave with, IMHO.

There are currently some nice pattern welded straights on the SRD website.

I don't know anthing about Damascus steel, other than it looks nice when it comes to knives. I do see that the prior owner left one heck of a hone wear mark on the spine in setting a large bevel.
My question is: Is Damascus steel supposed to be layered ?? If so, why is the hone damage on the spine showing all smooth steel under the surface?

These are items that look like straight razors but will never shave you. They are a way of taking money off the unwary.

If it says three generations and I have never heard about them or can't find something with a quick search, I'd pass.
