Thanked: 0Opinions?
Hi fellas, I was thinking about adding another straight to my modest collection. Do any of you have experience or opinions on the "German Hoppe" razor on www.shavingshop.com ? Or should I save up and buy a lower end 6/8 TI and put better scales on it?

Both are excellent options. Which would you prefer?

Gee X thats like asking a blind man whether he preferred yesterdays sunset or the one the day before.
I would say they are both quality razors and both will give you great shaves. New scales are cosmetic and won't affect shaving quality. Invest you money in the better blade. I think new scales should go on premium razors unless your really into doing all the work yourself. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 0Hmm, I understand what you fellas are saying, but does one outperform the other noticeably, or does one of you have a preference?

I don't know the Hoppe, but I know and like Sheffield steel and Thiers-Issard razors very much but only by a nose ahead of the Solingen razors. Almost imperceptably so actually. I think the other performance options should be well considered too, like whether you want a larger or smaller blade, spike or round, etc.
That's just me.

I recently bought the German Hoppe razor, and so far I like it a lot. I don't have much to compare it to, since the only other straight razor I have and have used is a Wester Bros. "Manganese steel" 5/8 spike point, but to me the German Hoppe feels chunkier and more solid, and I just feel more confident using it. It did take some work to get it shave ready on a pasted strop (something like 60-80 strokes) but then not even the TI razors come shave ready from the factory. It seems to be holding the edge well now that it's sharpened, though. I prefer using it to the Wester Bros. razor because of the round point and the feeling that it's more solid/heftier. Just my 2 cents.

Howard,
You'll never be truely satisfied until you
own one of each. Buy the Hoppe and
then start saving for a TI.

X is correct both are probably equal relatively speaking so buy the one with the geometry you prefer the most or the one that is cosmetically more pleasing to you.

Thanked: 0So what you guys are saying is that both razors are of good quality and will provide excellent shaves no matter what?
