I almost beat him!
I am sitting in my Operations Tent here in the Middle East cleaning my 6/8 J.A. Henckels Twin Works Straight Razor. A guy that works with me asks to look at it. I hand it to him and all of a sudden this gleam comes into his eye and he flips it open (or tries too) like you would see someone do in a movie. It goes flying out of his hand and hits the tent floor. I really believe time stood still right then. He started to pick it up and I beat him to it. The front edge of the blade broke off at the toe. The best way to describe the damage is a piece broke off of the toe at a 45 degree angle. The piece measures about 1/4 x 1/4 inch. I looked really hard for this razor and bought it from a forum member. I have only shaved with it a few times. It was a really great shaver. So, anyway, I went thru the usual emotions of anger, pain, and loss. Now, I am in mourning for a great shaving tool. Awwww.......oh well. I will chalk it up to experience. The scales are in excellent shape. I wish I could take pictures and show you guys. I may borrow a camera and show the damage done. I am wondering if it may be salvageable. Anyway, I just had to vent. Thanks,

You can probably get someone with power tools to grind down the length, and remove the offending chip. Was it a spike point? Of course, keeping the blade cool to preserve the heat treatment/temper would be a must during a grind operation.

Bryan,
Your self-restraint is commendable. Some people are so careless.
Sorry for your loss.

Bryan,
Sounds like he needs a little friendly fire... OK that was tasteless, but he at least owes you some polished boots and a few made beds over it.

lol!
One thing I have learned this deployment is to not over react. I have also learned to bite my tongue. This was an unfortunate accident. The guy is young and I looked back on some stupid things that I have done. We tend to forget how things were. I may just wait until I get home from the deployment and see about getting it fixed. I will be in the market for another Henckels very soon. I have certain name brands that I think would be nice to have and that one is one of them. Thanks for all the great comments. This is one great site.

I've handed razors over for people to look at before and half the time they drop it, scrape their thumb across the edge or do something equally stupid. Nothing this bad has happened to me and it's not going to. I've decided that nobody's allowed to handle my razors anymore because it's just a matter of time otherwise. I'm sure I would relax my rule for the right individual, but I'm not going to do that too easily. If anybody tries to object, I'm going to liken it to fng with somebody's diabetes needles or something like that. If they want to play with a straight razor, I'll be more than happy to help them aquire one and hopefully the'll have the respect for the instrument that only straight shavers have for these tools.
Lesson learned the hard way. Make him pay for another one.

yep
That is the way that I will handle it from now on also. That is a very good way of explaining it. I already called the wife and told her about the incident. Now, I have a reason to try to acquire another razor....hehehehe. I already went to www.vintagebladesllc.com and started looking. Now on to the other sites. Of course, it will be awhile, but research is everything in this pursuit of a shaving rotation.
