    Default Identification of straight razor

I picked up a razor the other day at an antique store. It has black scales and is marked "Made in Germany" on one side of the tang, and "Hare & French" "Bismarck N D" on the other side. The blade has "Guaranteed" on it. The razor is in good shape, but has an oily tar like stuff that I have not cleaned off yet, so some of the above could be a bit off. I can't find anything about the razor. Anyone know anything about it?

    Thanks

There probably was a hardware/general store at one time in Bismarck ND called Hare and French . The razor is likely made for that store, store brand, and you are not likely to find out who actually made it. Chances are good that being made in Germany that razor if of good quality.

Welcome to SRP, Like Bobh mentioned Hare & French was a hardware store in the beginning of the century, the clip below is from 1905.

Your razor was made in Germany for hare & French, it looks to be in fairly good condition needing a good cleaning and honing. Most of these German made razor for american companies turn out to be high quality razor.

Good looking razor, now aren't you glad you listened to me. Post your location in your profile, who knows, there may be someone close by that can help you with that razor. It looks as if all it needs is a clean up and hone to be shave ready. I would leave the patina but that's just me.
