The Agency decided people were just stupid. Most of us thought it meant there was something bad about the form which needed changing.

That's why I brought up the notion of "custom class" razor. Kind of a half step below true custom but basically most of the attributes of a true custom.
Well you definitely stirred the pot and what has ensued has been a spirited discussion. Semantics aside I want all who are artisans and quality restorers or even shaving enthusiasts to have a place at our community table. Our definitions and feelings for this lifestyle are strong. I for one want to learn and be motivated to further my skill set by learning from ALL members. Once we stratify into a class system of razor snobs I must excuse myself from further debate that pushes others out at the expense of those who want to elevate themselves and their product into the rarefied air which is lacking the oxygen of common sense. Custom does not have a singular rigid no room for any other thought definition. Custom is different, just like each of us is a custom individual. But we all fall under the umbrella of gentlemen.

OK... four shots of Capt. Morgan 100prof Spiced Rum and two Heineken's an I am raring to go at this debate. Everyone has their own opinion as to what is custom and what is not. As a school of thought, we are already divided from the "main stream" in the simple fact that we use straight razors instead of the de jour razors touted by the major manufacturers, why must we fracture ourselves into sub groups of this classification by limiting what WE ourselves classify as custom. Let us just simply enjoy our freedom from the enslavement of multibladed, pivoting head, vibrating massage razors that proliferate the store shelves trying to separate us from our hard earned monies and revel in our breaking away from the herd mentality. TUTI.

    Heros may refer to:

    Hero (ἥρως, hērōs)
Heros, a heroe of the Greek hero cult
    Thracian Heros or "Thracian horseman"
Heros genus, a genus of fish
    Heros, a play by Menander
Heros: The Sanguine Seven, a video game by Jeffrey Fullerton
HEROS GmbH & Co. KG, a wooden toy manufacturer in Lam, Germany
HerOS: Real-time operating system for Heidenhain machine controls
QUOTE=Neil Miller;1374384]That's very interesting Jimmy. One has to balance the 'look-at-me' attitude that is crying out for attention today (well, it has been around for a while and the rise of cheap media like youtube has seen it grow to incredible proportions, along with so-called talent shows featuring the vast horde of talentless individuals intermingled with a few truly talented) with the more subservient (on the whole) know-your-place (again, on the whole) attitude of years gone by.

"For instance, the Butler factory clung to the old ideal of hand-made. Every blade was forged, beaten, heat treated, finished, honed and scaled by hand, usually by little mesters renting room space or in the home hearth. One man could turn out a canteen of cutlery by hand, identical to the eye. That is literally thousands upon thousands of totally hand-crafted cutlery, none of which was called custom.

Do that today and you would need to widen all the door-jambs in your house, 'cus it is inevitable that your head would not fit through regular doorways. Those old craftsman earned a pittance, then went home at the end of the day. Artisans? Custom makers? no - bloody heros."

    Regards,
    Neil[/QUOTE]

If you spell Custom with a K as in Kustom, I think all bets are off.

I think its pretty straight forward and don't see what the confusion is. The word "custom" in this context is defined as "something made by someone for a specific person". Anything that lies outside of this definition IS NOT custom, period.

If someone asked me to make a razor for them, that razor (or in this case because I would be making it, an RSO) would be custom. If Mr Heart hand makes a razor and then sticks it in his shop to sell, then its NOT a custom razor it is a handmade razor!

Anything claiming to be a custom made razor, that lies outside the definition of custom is pure and simple marketing hype intended to make something more appealing to a buyer.

At the end of the day we can't simply choose to redefine a definition to suit our own needs, imagine what would happen if people decided to make up their own meaning for words. A banana is a banana, we can't start calling apples bananas simply because we like the sound of banana. The same applies to the word custom.
