I'm a newbie also. This was my choice for my first straight razor purchase. The black version is also a beauty. Be sure the razor will come shave ready. My razor was purchased from a vendor who did not provide honing services.

Thanked: 0I have a 5/8 pearlex and love it. I haven't tried a bismark yet, but I don't think you'll go wrong with a Dovo. I have three of them and they are superior shavers. Whichever you choose, try to stay with with 5/8 round point razor. They are perfect size for beginners.

6/8 Bismarck hands down. both shave excellent, Bismarck blade styling is the decider for me as to which is a keeper which is a "pass it on when im done." though the pearlex handles are nicer than a couple of the Bismarck choices to me.

I would go with the pearlex. I have a Bismarck and it's my least favorite razor. I don't know if it's only my particular Bismarck or all of them, but where it has gold plating, the steel was not tempered as the blade itself. The problem is that it rusts much more easily than a razor which was fully tempered. It's a constant worry, if I don't oil the razor it will certainly rust. From personal experience I would not buy another Bismarck. If the looks is a decisive factor for you, you should check out the DOVO Flowing (I own this one too), which is very similar to the Bismarck. It's a bit more pricey, but I never had any problems with it. Also, aesthetically speaking, for me it is a far more beautiful razor than the Bismarck. Have a nice day and take it easy.

I love the blade configuration of the Bismarck. Although Dovo is not my favorite razor manufacturer, that blade design surely ranks up there. By the way...you have an option if you want that blade with a tad less "bling" and really nice Palisander wood scales. TSS (The Superior Shave) markets it as their "Dovo Palisander". I have nothing but good things to say about that blade. And....it's guaranteed to be shave ready for sure. The owner, Jarrod, hones every blade he sells and that boy can work magic on a coticule

harryphm,
Remember an important consideration when comparing these two razors: the Bismarck has a thumb notch and the "Perlex" does not. Some gentlemen like the thumb notch and some don't. I have had both razors and, having a general dislike for the thumb notch, preferred the "Perlex" over the Bismarck. Not only that, but for some reason I felt far more intimate with my "Perlex" than I did with my Bismarck. In the end, go with what your heart tells you. Since you are just starting out, I'm sure you will face similar decisions in the future on other razors as you expand your collection.
