Thanked: 0John J. Hogan Special
I recently bought a "John J. Hogan Special" Sheffield razor. I have not been able to find any information on this razor and I was wondering if any of you have owned or have any information on it. It needs some slight restoration before I can shave with it, so I am very curious as to what I should expect. Any feedback would be much appreciated

Cperry,
Hello and welcome to Straight Razor Place. I trust one of our historians will join the conversation soon and shed some light on the razor.

Thanked: 3164I doubt if it is a Sheffield razor - most I have found on the net have the name in script on one side, and 'Made In Germany on the other' whilst only one mentions Sheffield and even that has 'Sheffield Steel' on the back of the tang rather than made in Sheffield.
Probably a german razor made for export.
No clue who John J. Hogan was, but the name seems to be popular, from a confederate soldier to a 1920s photographer to a turn of the 20th century catholic priest to several politicians to company execs to a ww2 soldier killed at Okinawa to a 1950s baseball player etc, etc, etc and loads of everyday folk.
I guess whoever he was, he was known on both sides of the Atlantic when this razor was in production.
Maybe someone of a similar vintage would know!
Regards,
Neil

Thanked: 0Thank you for the welcome Obie! It has been a pleasure thus far!
And yes Neil, this one only says "Made In Germany". It said sheffield on the add and as I am quite new to this I assumed that's what it was. I am new, but trying to learn, so thank you both very much for your feedback!

That's not a razor.... This is a razor (pulls out 9/8 wedge)
Razor rich, but money poor. I should have diversified into Eschers!
