Thanks Neil! I'll be the first to admit when I am wrong. I didn't realize there are that many species of beetle.

I figured the scales were a result of some drunk that found a rat tail rasp and had a good idea.
Danged ol' Dremel tool! :roflmao
You know, a dremel tool that had tiny mouthparts that chewed keratin would be really useful for some kinds of work!
We're getting there - I think sometime not that far in the future you could bioengineer horn growth in a shape you want or a specific property in a shape you want - say tasting bitter to the bugs within that shape and then you can let them eat away everything that you don't want to be there.
Or bioengineer the bugs so that you can control the direction in which they want to eat, then program something to steer them to eat everything but the shape you want left.
Yes! I want magnetically steerable dermestids!
Also engineered ivory and tortoiseshell. I want those a lot.
But magnetically steered dermestids would be awesome, and there is no way they would ever be used for evil. No one would ever launch an army of keratin-eating insects at someone they didn't like.
My hooves and horns are already gold plated, so I don't care!

Hey! It's an art form! :roflmao
