Thanked: 44Did I miss something?
Vintage Straight Razor | eBay
First, yes it needs new scales. Could not even guess how they ended up in that condition. Custom fitted.
It looks decent to me in the pictures, but I keep thinking I am missing something. For a sawbuck, I figured I would take a little risk.Amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic!

While I would hesitate to call the hone wear heavy it does have quite a bit of hone wear.
The state of the edge is hard to tell from the pics but it looks like there might be a corrosion problem.
The price isn't that great, don't get me wrong this razor might turn out very nice with some TLC but I've gotten razors in much better shape for a lot less.Last edited by Baxxer; 09-07-2014 at 06:55 PM.

Thanked: 433+1 on the hone wear otherwise it looks alright. I would start honing that with 2 or maybe 3 layers of tape

WOW, I'venever seen any scales that look like that before. No telling how they got that way........................its a mystery to me! Like they said, the blade has some hone wear but some tape on the spine might correct the problem along with some new scales.

Not to change the subject or that it matters but have any of you noticed that when you do a search for straight razor on eBay, every 2nd listing is for a Kriegar, every time, not just some of the time but every freakin' time!!! It doesn't bother me but it shows how much they are trying to push that junk off to people not knowing they are nothing but junk & to prove it, that is why it is on SRP's do not buy list.

Thanked: 3164It's no mystery how the scales got thar way.
In common with a lot of old horn scaled razors, these have been partially devoured by carpet beetles. They used to be found in wool carpets, and both wool and horn are formed from animal hair.
These beetles are also known as dermestids and over time they have gained a host of names, depending on which theit progeny are partial tl munching on - skin beetle, leather beetle, hide beetle, carpet beetle.
In fact for every form of animal protein there exists a dermestid that is partial to it, partly because there are 500 to 700 different species of them.

Neil
