In common with a lot of old horn scaled razors, these have been partially devoured by carpet beetles. They used to be found in wool carpets, and both wool and horn are formed from animal hair.

These beetles are also known as dermestids and over time they have gained a host of names, depending on which theit progeny are partial tl munching on - skin beetle, leather beetle, hide beetle, carpet beetle.

In fact for every form of animal protein there exists a dermestid that is partial to it, partly because there are 500 to 700 different species of them.

It figures there would be so many spices of them. I hate seeing a nice razor with beetle bites all in the scales!

One of the reasons why Barbers used Fume disinfectants in their cabinets.

I've seen plenty of beetle damage, but some of that looks like rodent gnawing to me!

Looks like it got left on a hot stove or something....

It looks very strange to me. Some of that may be beetle gnawing but there was definitely something else gnawing on it. It isn't the normal beetle gnawing.

That's not beetle damage... the scales are aerodynamic, way ahead of its time... lets one shave faster.

Either that, or it got caught in a Telepod teleportation device with Seth Brundle.... in a parallel universe there is a huge razor shaped insect made out of steel that was caught in the same Telepod...

Ahh how I love dermestidae.

Also, really no need to go crazy with tape, that razor doesn't have that much wear on it. The edge looks fine from the pics, my bet is that it just requires some mild honing.
