Thanked: 0So how far off am I from my initial feeling that this was a "budget" razor in its day? It doesn't seem to be very well finished off

Thanked: 3222Going back to what MattCB said, the evenly spaced vertical lines on the blade more than likely are grinding marks and a lot of razors were finished like that. The scales would seem normal for a razor of that period. There were different finishes applied to the blade that would require more work and higher end scales like those of ivory. That is not to mention engravings and fancy spine work too. So if by budget you mean a good no frills razors, I think you are right. That does not mean it is not a well made razor though. They just did not embellish the heck out of it.
Personally, I love vintage razors and had I found that one would attempt to keep it all original condition. Gently restore it, hone it and enjoy it for what it is. That is just me though.

Thanked: 0Very interesting, so its not WAD is WD with a crowsfoot! Does this date the razor, more or less how old could it be with these scales then?
Thanks for all your inputs here, you've made me realise that what I have is worth keeping original! If it wasn't for this forum then I would never have known, and who knows what I might have done to it
I'm just going to give it a quick buff, clean the scales carefully, and hone it up. It has a nice weight to it, quite a heavy blade and looks like its going to be a great shaver, will update after I shave with it this weekend.

Thanked: 3222The answer to the dating of your razor with the WD and broad arrow mark is in Neil Miller's post #4 in the linked thread. You generally will never get an exact date of when a razor was made but only a possible time span in which it might have been made as Neil suggests. Enjoy your shave this weekend.
