Thanked: 1patina on a SR?
Hey gents, so, on all of my bushcraft knives i force a patina if they are made of carbon steel. for a SR, would this actually damage the blade itself? I'm not doing it for a razor i would use everyday, its a project for my grandfather and it will be in a shadowbox anyways. But i still want it to be capable of delivering a good shave if needed. thanks, reno

If you want to shave with it don't put any rust on the edge.

I do not see why not. You have not mentioned your method of forcing a patina.
IF !.... the blade is thoroughly clean and does not have a bunch of pits, there should be no reason why not. Honing of the edge afterward will give the whole thing a finished look. Taped spine or not. A final coat of Balistol or similar long term preservative afterward would help to keep it for generations.
You did not mention whether the scales were celluloid. If they are be sure to have vent holes in the shadow box to allow out gassing. And, check the razor every few months also.
YMMV!

Thanked: 1thanks
thank you! I'm not sure how I want to force the patina just yet, the blade isn't heavily pitted or anything either. I just wanted a nice finish and older look to it. the scales are some kind of horn. I found the blade in an old japanese thrift shop. once i finish it up I may just post the picture. Again thank you for the help!
-cheers,

HI Castillo,
Just noticed your location!
I was stationed in Yokosuka for three years in the early 60's. Much has changed since then. I look at Google maps and try to orient myself with old memories. Lived in an old hotel above and behind Chuo Station on the hill. An exchange student from High School lived in Kamakura so I spent off time there and long liberties at Hakonese hotels or rode the original bullet trains to kobe, Nara for sight seeing. Tokyo I didn't care for other than to Akehabara for electronic goodies. Was nice, I could stand anywhere with a dumb expression and a child would come up to me and ask if they could help me find my directions, in English.
360¥= 1 USD.
Enjoy all you can of the Country, parts of it are beautiful.

Hot vinegar makes a nice patina without killing your blade
Plenty of post about it on here
I have done it without any problems and then honed and used it no problems to date
Like so
